Service Descriptions

The Taylor Clinic/General Psychology Services

The purpose of this facility is to provide outpatient treatment for residents in Brownwood and Brown County including diagnostic evaluation, individual, family, and group psychotherapy. Daytime crisis coverage is provided as indicated. Services are often multidisciplinary with primary physician/psychiatric consultation, state agency involvement, juvenile probation and Children’s Protective Services case managers, and school administration.

Client demographic data is similar to that of most rural outpatient facilities. Child and adolescent services are often diagnostic for learning disability and attention deficits. Evaluations for foster-care placement, child abuse, and juvenile delinquency are also conducted frequently. Diagnostic assessment and individual therapy for all populations is the primary focus.

Wellness Program Services

Within the Taylor Clinic exists a wellness program, combining physical and psychological interventions to promote healthier lifestyles. Services address general wellness, weight reduction, as well as stress management. “Professional coaching” and sport psychology are additional areas of interest.

Disability Determination/Rehabilitation Services

The Taylor Clinic maintains a close relationship with offices of the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services in Brownwood, Austin, and Stephenville. Clinicians provide mental status examinations as well as more comprehensive evaluations for diagnosis of disability and appropriateness for vocational rehabilitation services for adults and some children in Brown County and surrounding areas.

Chronic Pain Management Services

The purpose of this service is to provide outpatient pain management services for residents of Brownwood and Brown County. Primarily for adult chronic pain management, the service can also be geared toward and is equipped to assist adolescents with self-regulation of psychophysiological processes. Intake, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic pain, psychophysiciological processes, stress management, and behavioral self-regulation of undesirable behaviors are the primary foci of the PMAR service. Individual and group therapy services are offered in a multidisciplinary setting with psychiatrists, medical professionals, chiropractors, psychologists, and other mental health specialists. Other features of the program include the use of biofeedback and other psychophysiological monitoring techniques, liaison with community agencies, area medical practitioners, and Brownwood Regional Medical Center, dynamic case formulation and therapy (primarily through the use of physiological monitoring), case management, and a variety of educational opportunities on topics such as stress management, depression, anxiety, and aggression.

Rural Outpatient Satellite Clinics

The Taylor Clinic operates additional satellite offices in Coleman, San Saba, Goldthwaite, and Cisco, Texas. These satellite offices serve additional areas of the Texas Hill Country within a sixty-mile radius of Brownwood. The goal of these offices, like that at the main clinic in Brownwood, is to provide outpatient services including diagnostic evaluation, individual and family psychotherapy. The San Saba office works closely with The Dove Project, a domestic violence shelter. All offices work closely with state social service agencies to provide general psychological services to low-income individuals and families. Finally, the offices maintain close contact with the relevant school districts to provide diagnostic services for learning disabilities, individual education plans, and alternative school behavioral plans.

Neuropsychological Assessment and Diagnosis

This service provides neuropsychological evaluation and assessment diagnostic services for both pediatric and adult populations. Patients include those who have experienced stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injury, congenital brain abnormality, mental retardation, and learning disabilities. Recommendations for treatment may be made to the appropriate facility, medical practitioner, or referring agency. Primary neuropsychological assessment techniques utilize the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery for Younger Children, Older Children, and Adults, as well as other popular measures of neuropsychological assessment, such as the Dementia Rating Scale and Wechsler Memory Scale.

Head Start Early Childhood Intervention Program

The Taylor Clinic currently contracts services with various separate Head Start programs. The Clinic provides on-site screening and mental health observations in each classroom to identify children who may benefit from more comprehensive psychological assessment or therapeutic intervention. Once a referral has been made, the Clinic then provides advanced services that are required, which can include formal diagnostic testing, family counseling, academic reviews and discussions, therapy services and appropriate referral.
